Positive Peer Culture:
The Positive Peer Culture discipline has a long and successful history. The Tipton Academy incorporates some of the basic components from this discipline. PPC is neither a loosely organized program nor one that is totally run by the adolescents. There is a keen understanding of the need to have adults oversee the process without derailing it by taking over. When a youth arrives at the Tipton Academy, he will be assigned to a group and its staff mentor.
He will remain in this group throughout his stay. Each group will have responsibilities associated with it. Groups will be assigned varying details, community service projects, group aspects of the animal assistance program, sports/academic etc. teams, and group PPC sessions. In the group he will learn teamwork, sound decision making in the absence of specific guidelines, and how, through cooperation, significant accomplishments can be made. Staff are taught to understand the need for youth to learn how to work through their issues to help them prepare for similar situations they will have when returning to their families.
Cognitive Thinking:
This discipline is remarkably distinct in that it teaches how to dramatically alter one's belief that he is the victim of his own feelings and circumstances. In this discipline, excuses are not accepted. Change takes place when a person makes a conscious decision to think differently about himself and the world in which he exists. The program is an integrated, cognitive behavior change program for youth which includes cognitive restructuring, social skills development, and development of problem-solving skills. It is presented in the format of a small group setting (PPC groups).
Tipton Academy has a very strong academic program. The boys are required to complete every assignment with a “B” average. This instills in the boys a desire to achieve better grades than many of them have ever gotten. Many of the boys are able to get caught up in school, and many are even able to get ahead. When a student begins to head down a negative road, one of the first things to suffer is their school work. The longer a parent waits to enroll their child the further they get behind academically. The educational program at Tipton Academy works very well with students that are behind and also students that have a hard time staying focused.
Tipton Academy has an open door policy. This means is that anyone, potential parents, or parents of students enrolled are permitted on campus at any time without previous notice. This policy was adopted when Tipton Academy opened it’s doors almost 4 years ago. Our policy is that we do not have anything to hide, so why be secretive? Our company is founded on honesty and integrity. Employees that are not truthful with others are subject to dismissal. Staff are aware of the open door policy and understand they need to treat students with respect and dignity. Staff are instructed to treat boys like their parent may be observing them, because they just may be. Many schools today do not allow parents to make surprise visits and their doors are not open to the public.
